Process for Requesting Remission of Tariffs that apply on certain goods from the U.S.

As of September 8, 2026, the Government of Canada has imposed new counter-tariffs of 15%, 25%, and 50% on certain goods originating in the United States.

Importers may be eligible for relief under the United States Surtax Remission Order (2025). Additional information can be found at: Customs Notice 25-19: United States Surtax Remission Order (2025)

For goods that do not qualify under the United States Surtax  Remission Order (2025), the Government of Canada continues to provide a separate remission request process for importers facing exceptional circumstances.

Importers impacted by these measures may apply for tariff relief through Canada’s remission framework, which remains available for requests that meet specific criteria.

In relation to requests for remission of the tariffs, the Government will consider requests for remission in the following instances:
  • Where goods used as inputs cannot reasonably be sourced in Canada, either nationally or regionally, or from non-U.S. suppliers;
  • Other exceptional circumstances that, on a case-by-case basis, could result in severe adverse impacts on the Canadian economy.
Remission represents an exception to the rules by providing relief from otherwise applicable duties. As such, in all instances above, the federal government will only consider remission where it is required to address exceptional and compelling circumstances that, from a public policy perspective, are found to outweigh the primary rationale behind the application of the tariffs.

To facilitate a timely review, remission requests must be supported with the required information outlined in the Government’s submission template.

Additional information, including the application template and submission requirements, can be found here: Process for requesting remission of tariffs that apply on certain goods from the U.S. – Canada.ca

Remission requests may be submitted directly to remissions-remises@fin.gc.ca with “U.S. Remission” included in the subject line.
