On late Friday, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada-U.S. trade negotiations have been suspended and that the Government of Canada intends to introduce retaliatory tariffs in response to the United States’ implementation of Section 338 additional duties on certain Canadian products. Canada intends to respond with tariffs on U.S. goods on a dollar-for-dollar basis.

What We Know
The Canadian government has indicated that its proposed retaliatory measures are expected to include products from the following U.S. sectors:
· Steel
· Appliances
· Agricultural equipment
· Pulp and paper products
· Electronics
The retaliatory tariffs are expected to take effect on the Tuesday following Labour Day. The federal government has also indicated that support programs for affected businesses will be announced, with additional details expected in the coming days.
The announcement follows the expiration of the temporary suspension of the U.S. Section 338 additional duties, resulting in the implementation of 50% ad valorem duties on a broad range of Canadian-origin products.
Information Still Pending
The Government of Canada has not yet released several key implementation details, including:
· The complete list of affected U.S.-origin products
· Applicable tariff rates
· CBSA customs and accounting procedures
· Potential exclusions, remission programs, or other relief measures
